ROMANESQUE ART: CHURCH

THE CRUSADES

Las cruzadas fueron una serie de campañas militares durante la época Medieval (siglos XI-XIII). Se producían luchas de los cristianos contra los musulmanes del Oriente Medio.
Los musulmanes conquistaron Jerusalén en 1076. Jerusalén era muy importante para los musulmanes ya que Mahoma (el fundador de la fe musulmana) había estado allí. Pero los cristianos querían recuperar Jerusalén, porque había sido suyo siglos antes y Jesús había vivido allí.
Los cristianos lucharon para conseguir Jerusalén, mientras que los musulmanes lucharon para mantener Jerusalén.
Un dato muy importante: estas guerras llegaron a durar casi 200 años.

A continuación se muestra una línea del tiempo de las cruzadas:

• Saracens – They were Muslims pirates who attacked the Mediterranean coasts of Europe from 850 to 1100 approximately.
• Serf - a person who worked in the land and owned by the feudal lord in the Feudal times.
• Nobles – they were the knights and their families in the Medieval society. Their duty was to defend the population.
• Fief or manor – the land that the nobles received in exchange for helping to the king in the Feudal times.
• Vassals – the barons who governed in the king´s name in exchange for a fief or manor under feudalism.
• Paid homage – It was a ceremony where the vassals swore allegiance to the king.
• Court – it was formed by a group of clergy, soldiers and lawyers. They helped the king to govern.
• Demesne – a part of the land on the manor that used the lord. Everything grown there was his.
• Clergy – they were formed by priests and monks. They had to pray for the spiritual salvation of the people.
• Privileged states – they were the clergy and the nobles. They had many advantages.
• Pope – he was the head of the Catholic Church in Rome. He had great influence.

HOW BREAD WAS MADE IN MEDIEVAL TIMES?

La preparación del pan consistía en:

En primer lugar, se sembraba el cereal (en otoño), y se recogía en verano, cuando ya estaba seco. Después, el grano se molía en el molino, para obtener la harina.
Una vez obtenida, se cogía un recipiente, y en su interior, se echaban la harina, sal, y levadura derretida en agua templada. Se amasaba, hasta conseguir una masa uniforme que sólo se pegara entre sí.
Luego, se tapaba con paños limpios, para que guardara el calor y aumentara hasta alcanzar el doble de su volumen, y tardaba entre 1 y 2 horas, aproximadamente.
Por último, estiraban la masa con un rodillo y le daban la forma que quisieran (hogaza, barra, trenzado,…) y se metía al horno para cocerlo.

BAYEUX TAPESTRY

1. Encuentra esta escena en el Bayeux Tapestry. ¿Qué está pasando? ¿Qué figura piensas que es William? ¿Qué te dice la escena sobre el?
William es el hombre que lleva una túnica azul con una capa. William y Harold vuelven de Normandía y alcanzan la ciudad de Bayeux.

2. Encuentra esta escena en el Bayeux Tapestry. ¿Qué está pasando? ¿Qué te dice la escena sobre William?
Están llevando los alimentos y la bebida a los barcos. También armas: cascos, espadas, lanzas… Todo ello le servirá para cuando estén en la guerra.


3. Vete a 'The Battle of Hastings Scene 5'. Mira cuidadosamente esta parte de la escena. ¿Qué te dice sobre William?
La imagen nos dice que, después de una caída de su caballo, Guillermo levanta su casco para enseñar su cara. Esto muestra a sus tropas que él está todavía vivo y los anima a seguir luchando. Pienso que Guillermo es un gran luchador, y que no se rinde nunca.

4. Encuentra esta escena en el Bayeux Tapestry. ¿Qué figura es William en este dibujo? ¿Qué está haciendo él?
Guillermo es el que tiene una maza en la mano. En esta pintura, Guillermo está dando un discurso a sus soldados, para animarles.

5. Vete a 'The Battle of Hastings Scene 5'. ¿Qué está haciendo William y por qué?

Guillermo está retirándose el casco de su cara, y le está diciendo a sus soldados que no dejen de luchar, porque tienen que conseguir la invasión en Inglaterra.

6. Resume por que crees que Guillermo el Conquistador fue un líder medieval exitoso.
Yo creo que Guillermo fue un gran líder medieval porque tenía mucho poder ya que dirigía su ejército y les animaba a luchar continuamente sin rendirse para poder ganar. Así consiguió llegar a ser rey de Inglaterra, después de derrotar al rey Harold y matarle.

DESCRIBIR UNA PINTURA




El reinado de Alfonso X el Sabio destacó en el orden cultural; por ejemplo, puede datarse en su época la adopción del castellano como lengua oficial. Reunió en su corte a sabios y eruditos de las tres religiones peninsulares (cristianos, musulmanes y judíos), creando escuelas de investigadores y traductores en Murcia, Sevilla y, especialmente, Toledo; su labor ayudó a transmitir al Occidente cristiano importantes elementos de la cultura oriental y de sus raíces clásicas (traducción al castellano de la Biblia, el Corán, el Talmud, la Cábala, Calila y Dimna…).
El propio rey dejó una abundante obra escrita, tanto literaria (Cantigas de Santa María) como histórica (Crónica general, Grande e General Estoria) y científica (Libros del saber de astronomía, Lapidario…).
En esta pintura, se ve a Alfonso X y su corte. Alfonso X está sentado en un trono, que se encuentra dentro de su palacio. Alfonso X, con su mano izquierda, está dando órdenes a los sabios, y el señor que se encuentra a su derecha es su ayudante, y está echando a las personas pobres que iban a pedir a Alfonso X.

CASTILLO




Un castillo supone mucha responsabilidad, por lo que esto quiere decir que no podía ser el dueño cualquiera. Si alguien quería apoderarse de un castillo, tendría que luchar, incluso a veces podía acabar habiendo muertes.

Las armaduras medievales fueron un elemento esencial para los caballeros de la Edad Media, resguardándoles ante las acometidas que pudieran sufrir con espadas u otras armas. Ya desde la antigüedad cuando el hombre tenía que enfrentarse a un combate cuerpo a cuerpo, intentaba protegerse de alguna forma, primero con pieles de animales, luego con cuero, y por último con los metales, con las armaduras. Podían utilizar, cuchillos, espadas, sables, tijeras, armaduras, sagas, hachas,…
